In my early career days in India  , anesthetist was looked upon as the doctor dependent on the reflective glory of a surgeon . Bigger the surgeon , bigger the aura of anesthetist . 

Out of India - I realized  that anesthetist was the super boss & CEO  of OR , ICU , CCU , Surgical Care and managed Patient Care , Human Resources , supply chain to administration . 

I am sure the perception and the role must have changed by now ...
