rebirth

Man's main task in life is to give birth to himself." This is it. It's like the butterfly. First it is given birth as a caterpillar. And then it transforms, it gives birth to itself as a butterfly. We are very much the same. We are born into this body, and then we discover who we really are, we transform ourselves into who we want to be. And then we can fly.

Till life do us apart by Pramod Nawalkar

My respect for Pramod Nawalkar has gone up after reading this wonderful article on Mid day. He was one of the early pillars of Shiv Sena when the orgainzation was struggling to find roots in Mumbai. Annual marathi magazine of 'Brahmanti' became popular with his lucid and entertaining articles in criminal world of Mumbai. I dont know why he was relegated to just a minister when Shiv Sena came to power. I am reproduing his article : Quote If I ask you if divorces in Mumbai outnumber marriages, you will laugh at me. But if the trend continues, divorces will outnumber marriages in five years or so. Around a decade ago, divorce was taboo. But not any more. Definitions of character have changed. Even a divorce has become fashionable.Though the number of courts handling divorce cases has increased five times, Mumbai has over 8,000 cases pending and there are more everyday. There are thousands of others who did not go to family courts but decide to separate with mutual consent. I will h...

Nani Ardeshir Palkhivala (1920-2002)

Image
Nani A. Palkhivala, a stalwart of the Tata Group, passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday, December 11, 2002. He was 82. For me, image of Nani Palkhivala would be synonymous with public speech on Union budget. His speech on Union Budget would attract stock brokers, Investment bankers, chartered accountants, businessmen, management students and crowd would swell 50,000 and above. The figure at any of those political rallies at Shivaji Park would be bigger with the exception of chaos, truck loads of hired participants with shouting slogans. I attended his budget speech at Muscat Sheraton , Oman the same day when Mumbai was rocked by bomb blast. He explained that events in Bombay has troubled him and he may no be at his best . I also remember the controversy when he was asked to resign for taking measurement of Nancy Carter’s feet for her shoes. Media criticized him for lowering dignity of India and office of ambassador. I never understood then and even now the reasons for the same. More so, w...

Prof. Abdul Kalam

Year 1998: Siri Fort Sports complex: Time – Post dusk evenings. I would cross Prof Abdul Kalam every evening when I would go for jog; often this would happen along the golf course on the dirt track provided for joggers. He would have a brisk walk all by himself. Here was a man who was an architect of missile systems in India, a recipient of Bharat Ratna and there was neither security nor any paraphernalia around him I saw him next time toilet airport toilet when we were next to eachother. I could observe his unobtrusive behavior at the airport. He was carrying a small briefcase and he had no hesitation standing in a security queue and having him frisked by security officials. These memories came to me when I saw him swearing on as President of India on 25th July 2002. ‘Wings of Fire’- his autobiography is short, sweet, and inspiring. I liked the way he observed the American way of managing things ‘Americans meet their problems head on. They attempt to get out of them rather than suffer...

Scary figures of India

90% of rural households do not have sanitation. No city or village has uninteruptted supplies of electicity. 8% of labour workforce is covered by labour laws. only 1/3rd of the electricity generated is paid for. several hundred thousand people are languishing in jails without trial. each court case takes 20 years to settle . How aptly somoone has summed up the dark side of India : In India, we have too many laws very little justice too many buerocrats very little governance too many politicians very little areas of development
